New Sanctions Against Russia: Finland Proposes Tariffs on Imports to the EU

Finland has initiated a proposal to impose tariffs on all imports from Russia to the European Union. This measure is planned to be implemented alongside existing sanctions, which will not require unanimity from all member states.

The proposal has become relevant against the backdrop of Hungary’s ongoing resistance, which opposes the continuation of already imposed sanctions against Russia. In light of these events, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that if Russia refuses a 30-day ceasefire, the majority of EU countries and participants in the “coalition of the willing” are prepared to intensify sanctions pressure on Moscow.

Additionally, the United Kingdom has announced the largest sanctions package in history, covering 100 oil tankers from Russia’s shadow fleet, which have transported cargo worth over $24 billion since the beginning of 2024.

In response to the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump, after a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, called on Russia for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. He emphasized that if this is not adhered to, the U.S. and its partners will be forced to impose new sanctions.

Furthermore, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, noted that the new EU sanctions package could be approved as early as the end of May.
