Mirage 2000-5F of the Ukrainian Air Force with Magic-2 Missiles: Application Features

New photographs of the Mirage 2000-5F fighter jet of the Ukrainian Air Force, equipped with Magic-2 air-to-air missiles, have been released online. During a training flight, the crew practiced intercepting Russian kamikaze drones known as “Shahed,” which is particularly relevant given the ongoing attacks from the Russian Federation.

Unique Features of the Mirage 2000-5F in the Ukrainian Air Force

According to Ukrainian aviators, the Mirage 2000-5F, currently in service with the 107th Separate Aviation Wing, was spotted with unusual underwing fuel tanks: one completely yellow and the other in yellow and blue colors. Alongside them are two Magic-2 missiles, used to destroy enemy drones. During the training flight, the pilots practiced landing and takeoff maneuvers, allowing for rapid response to changes in the air situation.

“The channel emphasized a special training technique where the aircraft first lands and then makes an approach for a second circuit. It was also noted that the Magic-2 missiles under the fuselage are actively used during the downing of Russian ‘Shaheds.'”

In addition to training flights, footage of the Mirage 2000-5F patrolling with the same colored fuel tanks and R.550 Magic missiles has also emerged online. In one of the images, the fighter is captured from a long distance, making it difficult to discern the details of its design; however, its armament and coloring are clearly visible.

Technical Specifications and Combat Capabilities of the Mirage 2000-5F

The Mirage 2000 is a French multirole fighter that Ukraine received in February 2025. According to preliminary information, at least three aircraft of this modification are currently in service, but their number may increase. The Mirage 2000-5F variant is capable of using SCALP missiles, AASM Hammer bombs, and modern air-to-air missiles such as MICA. The Magic-2 (R.550 Magic II), which are actively used against drones, are nearly 3 meters long, weigh about 100 kg, have a warhead of up to 20 kg, and a range of up to 20 km at speeds of up to 3 Mach.

Additional fuel tanks, as noted by experts, provide the fighter with up to 4000 liters of fuel, allowing for nearly double the flight duration — approximately from 2 to 4 hours. This significantly enhances the effectiveness of airspace patrols and rapid response to threats.

The first Mirage 2000-5Fs appeared in the skies over Ukraine back in March 2025, and at that time, they were equipped with SCALP-EG and AASM missiles. In January 2026, Ukraine also received MICA missiles with a range of up to 80 km, which are gradually replacing Magic-2 in combat sorties. It is worth noting that at the end of February, the first footage of the Mirage 2000 using AASM Hammer missiles against Russian troop positions appeared online.
