Kyiv is facing a serious crisis as a result of intense Russian shelling that has been ongoing for the past two months. The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, stated that the city is on the brink of catastrophe due to constant attacks on critical infrastructure.

Widespread Strikes and Harsh Winter
According to Klitschko, for several weeks, Russian forces have been conducting continuous airstrikes that have significantly damaged Kyiv’s energy facilities. The capital is home to about 3.5 million people who are experiencing the toughest winter since the full-scale war began. Temperatures in the city have repeatedly dropped below minus 20 degrees, and Kyiv is covered in a thick layer of snow and ice.
Amid extreme weather conditions, Russia is employing a tactic of massive missile and drone launches, leading to widespread power, heating, and water supply outages. Three main power plants that provide centralized heating for the city, as well as other energy facilities across Ukraine, have been particularly hard hit.
Challenges for the Capital and the Country
“Right now, the question of our country’s future — whether we will survive as an independent nation or not — is still open,” said the former world boxing champion who became mayor.
The escalation of Russian attacks is creating extremely difficult conditions for Kyiv residents, depriving them of basic utilities during the coldest time of the year. City authorities are calling for further support and solidarity as the capital of Ukraine fights for survival amid an unprecedented energy crisis and ongoing shelling.
