Major Trading Partners and Import Structure
The main suppliers of goods to Ukraine remain China, Poland, and Germany. In 2025, China exported products worth 15.1 billion dollars to Ukraine, Poland – 6.4 billion dollars, and Germany – 5.4 billion dollars. The largest share of imports consists of machinery and equipment, chemical industry products, as well as fuel and energy resources. On the other hand, the most Ukrainian goods were exported to Poland (4.2 billion dollars), Turkey (2.2 billion dollars), and Germany (2 billion dollars).
Investments in Security and Recovery as the Main Factor for Import Growth
The National Bank of Ukraine notes that during the full-scale war, the current account deficit has significantly increased. Experts identify the main reason for this widening deficit as the increase in investment in the security and recovery sector. The substantial growth in the import of machinery products (up 36% year-on-year over the first three quarters of 2025) is primarily driven by the needs of the defense sector. There has also been an increase in the import of energy resources due to intensified attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure and the arrival of various equipment for weapon production. At the same time, consumer imports grew more slowly – only by 8% in the first eight months of 2025, and its share in total imports gradually decreased.
“The current account deficit has a fundamental source of financing: funds from international partners,” the NBU explained, emphasizing that these funds are essentially investments in common European security.
