Hungary and Slovakia Oppose the Abandonment of Russian Gas

Hungary and Slovakia, as expected, opposed the REPowerEU initiative, which aims to stop the import of Russian energy resources by the end of 2027. These two European Union countries promise not to support this program, citing potential significant economic losses due to the abandonment of Russian gas, oil, and nuclear energy.

Position of the Slovak Prime Minister

In particular, as reported by the publication Dennik N, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico emphasized that the consequences of such a decision could be more serious for the EU than for Russia. He described the REPowerEU roadmap as unacceptable for Slovakia, stating:

“We ask the European Commission: measure five times — cut once”

.

Contract with Gazprom

Fico also reminded that Slovakia signed a contract with the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom for gas supplies until 2034, and the potential consequences of terminating this agreement could be severe. He expressed concerns about rising gas prices but acknowledged the importance of achieving the strategic goal of reducing the European Union’s dependence on supplies from other countries.
