How Will the Alpenglow Protocol Change the Solana Blockchain?

Alpenglow is one of the largest updates to the Solana platform since its inception, replacing the consensus mechanism in its network.

The primary goal of the changes is to accelerate block finalization to 100-150 milliseconds, which will help eliminate bottlenecks in the architecture and bring the network’s speed closer to Web2 standards.

Despite optimistic claims about improvements in several characteristics, the new model has already faced criticism for potentially increasing centralization and dependence on large validators.

Implementation of the New Protocol

On May 19, 2025, developers from Anza presented Alpenglow — the updated consensus protocol for Solana, which they believe will be a significant milestone in the network’s development. This mechanism completely reworks key logics, such as finalization and block transmission.

Alpenglow aims to eliminate architectural limitations that currently result in approximately 13 seconds from the moment a block is created to its final confirmation. This makes working with the blockchain predictable, but not instantaneous. The implementation of the new consensus mechanism could theoretically reduce these delays to a few dozen milliseconds.
