Google Integrates Gemini into Maps: Voice Navigation and Object Recognition

Google has expanded the capabilities of its Maps service by integrating the artificial intelligence Gemini. Now, users can interact with a virtual assistant during their travels, receiving personalized recommendations and navigation tips without the need to use their hands.

Intelligent Support for Drivers

The new features allow users to ask Gemini questions about establishments and infrastructure along their route, receiving brief information summaries—from the latest news to sports event results. Drivers can use voice commands to, for example, add events to their calendar or report traffic incidents and obstacles on the road. The system also supports conversational dialogue, allowing users to clarify details—for instance, finding out about the availability of restaurants with a specific menu nearby, and then asking about parking at the chosen establishment.

“AI combines Street View and navigation data for more accurate suggestions”.

Enhanced Navigation and Integration with Google Lens

Gemini enhances visual navigation: the service analyzes Street View data to recognize landmarks and suggest more accurate routes. Instead of an abstract distance to a turn, Maps indicates a specific and noticeable object nearby—such as a gas station or café—and highlights it on the screen. According to the company, the AI processes information about 250 million places and Street View images to improve navigation suggestions.

With the integration of Google Lens, users can point their smartphone camera at buildings or landmarks to receive detailed responses from Gemini—for example, a description of the place and reasons for its popularity.

The new features will gradually roll out on iOS and Android devices. Initially, traffic situation alerts will be available in the U.S. for Android, while enhanced navigation to landmarks and Lens features with Gemini will be available to American users by the end of the month.
