Germany to Transfer 84 MW Gas Power Plant to Ukraine to Support Energy System

The German company Sefe has announced its intention to transfer a gas power plant to Ukraine, which previously provided technological heat for the “Nord Stream-1” pipeline. This equipment is planned to be provided to the Ukrainian power plant operator as part of humanitarian aid on a self-pickup basis.

Gas Power Plant After the Shutdown of “Nord Stream-1”

After the cessation of Russian gas supplies to Germany in September 2022, the operation of this power plant became economically unfeasible. The 84 MW plant, which was used for heating gas during its injection into the German network, was shut down in 2023 due to the lack of other heat consumers in the region. Despite attempts to find a buyer for the equipment, no deal was reached.

Support for Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure and Criticism of the Decision

Sefe emphasizes that the transfer of the power plant will not result in financial losses for the company, as dismantling and scrapping it would be equally costly. At the same time, this decision will strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“The power installation will be provided to the Ukrainian power plant operator on a self-pickup basis as part of humanitarian aid,” Sefe stated.

At the same time, the intention to transfer the power plant to Ukraine has already sparked negative reactions from the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD). A representative of the party in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament, Nikolaus Kramer, stated that this initiative is “absurd,” as it concerns a fully functional combined heat and power installation.

It is worth noting that in September 2022, a major accident occurred on the “Nord Stream-1” and “Nord Stream-2” pipelines, resulting in damage to both strands of the first pipeline and one of the two strands of the second.
