Five Countries Boycott Eurovision 2026 Due to Israel’s Participation: Details and Reasons

Eurovision 2026 has become the most scandalous in the 70-year history of the competition — five countries have announced a boycott of this year’s event due to Israel’s participation. The contest, taking place in Vienna (Austria) from May 12 to 16, features 35 countries, but broadcasters from Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Slovenia have decided not to air the show in protest against the inclusion of the Israeli delegation.

Reasons for the Boycott and Broadcasters’ Reactions

The reasons for the countries’ refusal to participate vary, but they are mostly related to protests against Israel’s military operation in Gaza. Some broadcasters have accused the Israeli government of genocide — claims that Israel categorically denies. At the same time, most of the mentioned broadcasters share the stance of their governments, which are known for their criticism of Israel’s policies.

In the past month, politicians from Spain, Slovenia, and Ireland have unsuccessfully attempted to persuade the European Union to suspend trade privileges for Israel. However, according to representatives of the broadcasters, the decision to boycott was made independently, without direct instruction from the governments.

“Broadcasters from Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia have confirmed their refusal to air the event. The contest takes place in Vienna, Austria, from May 12 to 16, 2026 (semifinals and final), with Israel participating despite the boycott.”

Thus, Eurovision 2026 will take place without the participation of five countries, and their boycott has become the largest in the history of the song contest.

Opening Ceremony and Contest Progress in Vienna

The official opening of the 70th Eurovision took place at the Vienna City Hall, where the main colors were black and red. This event is the only opportunity for all participants to gather together before the competition begins. After two semifinals on May 12 and 14, 25 out of 35 countries will qualify for the final.

Among the features of this year’s contest are increased security measures for the Israeli delegation. No incidents were reported during the appearance of the Israeli representative Noam Beatan on the turquoise carpet. The singer will perform the ballad “Michelle,” which has already entered the top 10 according to bookmakers’ ratings a week before the final. Earlier, Beatan complained about the negative reactions from the audience during rehearsals.

There were also some amusing moments: the representative of Germany, Sarah Engels, joked that she might go on stage in her pajamas due to lost luggage containing her stage costumes. Later, the airline Eurowings returned her belongings.

Favorites and Ukraine’s Participation

Ukraine is represented at the anniversary Eurovision by Viktoriya Korniykova (Leléka) with the composition “To My Loved Ones.” According to bookmakers’ predictions, the Ukrainian participant has a high chance of making it to the final ten.

The highest chances of winning are given to Finland, as well as Denmark and Greece. Only 1% of users on betting platforms are betting on Ukraine’s victory.
