Ethereum developers have announced the planned implementation of the Pectra update, set to take place on May 7, 2025. This update, which has been anticipated since March 2024, will be a significant step in enhancing the network following a previous upgrade called Dencun.
This is reported by Finway
The decision on the update date was made during a call among Ethereum’s core developers, just a week after the successful testing of Pectra on the Hoodi testnet. This is the third and final test before the release on the Ethereum mainnet. Earlier tests on Holesky and Sepolia revealed bugs, leading to a delay in the release.
Key Changes in the Pectra Update
The Pectra update will include 11 key Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at enhancing user experience and network efficiency. One of the main innovations will be the expansion of smart contract capabilities for cryptocurrency wallets, making them more user-friendly and secure.
One significant improvement for validators is EIP-7251, which will increase the maximum Ethereum staking size from 32 to 2048 ETH. This innovation will allow operators using multiple validators to operate through a single node, simplifying management and improving efficiency.
Closure of Holesky Testnet
It is also worth noting that the Holesky testnet will be closed in September 2025 due to a failure identified during the deployment of the Pectra update. This underscores the importance of thorough testing of new features before their implementation on the mainnet.
As a reminder, the Holesky testnet will be closed in September 2025 due to a failure identified during the deployment of the Pectra update.
