EIB invests over €74 million in renewable energy, transport, and energy efficiency in Ukraine

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is allocating over €74 million to Ukraine to support large-scale projects in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and public transport development.

Investments in Renewable Energy and Modernization of Educational and Medical Institutions

One of the key funding areas is the renewable energy development program (RES), which is moving towards practical implementation. The first tranche, exceeding €1.1 million, will enable the establishment of solar power plants with energy storage systems in six hospitals and educational institutions in the Poltava, Vinnytsia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Additionally, €22 million will be directed towards energy-efficient modernization of universities across the country. This investment is complemented by a grant of €6.75 million provided by the multilateral donor initiative E5P. Another €5.52 million will be used for the renovation of public buildings—schools, kindergartens, and hospitals—with the implementation of modern energy-efficient technologies in the western regions, particularly in Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Volyn regions.

“Ukrzaliznytsia” will receive €13.49 million for the modernization of railway border crossings and infrastructure, which will facilitate an increase in freight flow and integration with the EU transport network.

An additional E5P grant of €1.2 million is designated for improving conditions in medical institutions in Kovel, Lanivtsi, and Sarny.

Development of Public Transport and Railway Infrastructure

A total of €24.66 million will be allocated for the development of urban transport: specifically, for the construction of a depot in Lviv, as well as the procurement of new trams, trolleybuses, and buses for Lviv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, and Ternopil. This is already the second tranche of assistance for public transport in the past year.

A significant portion of the funding will also go towards the modernization of railway infrastructure: “Ukrzaliznytsia” will receive €13.49 million for updating border crossings, which will allow for an increase in freight volumes and accelerate Ukraine’s integration into the European Union’s transport system.
