The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported the death of a person near the site of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. According to the organization, the incident occurred in the morning at a transport workshop near the plant as a result of a drone strike, which led to the death of the driver.

IAEA investigates the circumstances of the tragedy
The agency has not yet specified who might have been responsible for the use of the drone that struck. IAEA representatives emphasize that their team on the scene has already begun investigating the incident and continues to monitor the situation at the site.
“The IAEA team on the ground will investigate the incident and continue to monitor the situation.”
Nuclear safety at risk
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has repeatedly stated that any attacks on nuclear power plants or in their vicinity pose a threat to nuclear safety and should not occur under any circumstances.
It is worth noting that all six reactors of the Zaporizhzhia NPP have been in cold shutdown since 2022. The IAEA is continuously present at the plant to oversee compliance with safety standards, especially during shelling and combat operations.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest in Europe, was seized by Russian forces in the first weeks of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, the plant has not been generating electricity, and Ukraine and the Russian Federation regularly accuse each other of actions that threaten the nuclear safety of the facility and surrounding areas.
