Dispute Over Polymarket’s Decision on Zelensky’s Suit Bet of $237 Million

The prediction platform Polymarket has found itself at the center of a scandal due to the outcome of a market with a trading volume exceeding $237 million, related to the bet on whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will appear in a classic suit by the end of June 2025. Despite photographs from the NATO summit in the Netherlands, where Zelensky was seen in a jacket and trousers, the result was recorded as “no,” provoking a wave of outrage among platform users.

Criticism of the Decision and Suspicions of Manipulation

The final verdict was made by the independent oracle UMA, which noted that there was a “lack of credible consensus” in the coverage of this event. According to UMA’s explanation, this prevented the confirmation of the bet’s conditions, despite numerous media and social media testimonies. During the appeals process, the previous decision that recognized the bet as fulfilled was overturned.

“The UMA oracle, serving as an independent arbiter for prediction markets, stated in its final decision on July 1 that there was a ‘lack of credible consensus’ in the coverage of the event. In its view, this made it impossible to confirm the fulfillment of the bet’s conditions.”

Polymarket participants and numerous commentators expressed dissatisfaction with this position, accusing the arbitration system and the token-based voting mechanism of being susceptible to manipulation. Users believe this allows large investors to influence market outcomes.

Community Reaction and Implications for Prediction Markets

An additional resonance was created by the public statement of entrepreneur Martin Shkreli, who during a livestream called UMA’s decision a “scam” and promised to reach out to the platform’s investors. Users also recalled a similar case in May when clothing visually similar to Zelensky’s suit was also not recognized as a suit, setting a precedent for the current situation.

Following the scandal, the competing platform Myriad Markets has already offered new markets related to the controversial decisions regarding Zelensky, attempting to attract the dissatisfied audience. Analysts predict that Polymarket’s competitors may leverage the erosion of trust in the platform to strengthen their own positions in the prediction market.
