Decline in Birth Rate in Ukraine
From 1990 to 2001, the birth rate in Ukraine nearly halved, dropping from 657,200 in 1990 to 376,500 in 2001. After that, there was a brief period of growth: the rate increased annually, reaching 512,500 in 2009. However, since 2012, the demographic situation in Ukraine has begun to deteriorate again.
Since 2014, excluding the occupied territories, the birth rate has been steadily declining. In 2014, 465,900 children were born, while in 2021, the number was 273,800.
Mortality and Its Impact on Demographics
In contrast, the highest mortality rate in Ukraine was observed from 1993 to 2009, with over 700,000 people dying each year. Since 2010, this figure has started to decrease. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021, there was a sharp increase in mortality: 616,800 and 714,300 people died, respectively.
In 2024, the mortality rate in Ukraine actually exceeded the birth rate by three times. Throughout the year, 495,100 people died, while only 176,100 were born.
