In Ukraine, there has been a rapid increase in the popularity of electric vehicles in recent years. Experts from the Institute of Automotive Market Research analyzed the dynamics of primary registrations of imported used passenger cars by fuel type in the first half of 2022–2025 and found significant changes in the preferences of Ukrainian car enthusiasts.

Market Changes: Gasoline Cars Lead, Diesel Cars Lose Ground

The largest segment of the market continues to be occupied by gasoline cars. By the end of the first half of 2025, their share was 46.1%, which is slightly lower compared to the same period last year when the figure was 47.6%. Specialists explain this by the wide selection of gasoline car models in Europe, significant imports of such vehicles from the USA, as well as the simplicity and relative affordability of their maintenance.

At the same time, diesel cars continue to lose their position in the market. In 2022, their share reached 56.9%, but by 2025 this figure had fallen to 23.2%. This trend is explained by the introduction of new restrictions on diesel in EU countries, low demand for old diesel cars in Europe, the absence of diesel models in the USA, and the overall decline in the attractiveness of this type of fuel.

Rapid Growth in the Popularity of Electric Vehicles

The most striking trend in recent years has been the confident growth of the share of electric vehicles in the Ukrainian market. From 2022 to 2025, the percentage of electric cars among imported used vehicles increased from 1.2% in 2022 to 22.1% in 2025. The interim figures for 2023 and 2024 were 10.7% and 16.7%, respectively.

“The growth of the share of electric vehicles has become one of the most noticeable trends in the domestic automotive market. The figures for 2022-2025 were 1.2%, 10.7%, 16.7%, and 22.1%, respectively. The choice is driven by a relatively developed charging infrastructure; the availability of cars from China, South Korea, and the USA; and savings on fuel.”

Among the main factors stimulating the choice of electric vehicles, experts note the developed network of charging stations, the availability of electric cars from China, South Korea, and the USA, as well as significant savings on fuel compared to traditional gasoline and diesel cars.
