The cost of basic food products in Italian supermarkets in July 2025 often exceeds the prices of similar goods in Ukraine. A blogger conducted a detailed comparison of food prices in the Lidl (Italy) and Silpo (Ukraine) chains, creating a consumer basket that was as similar as possible.

Comparison of Prices for Basic Products

The comparison basket included apples, potatoes, bread, eggs, Gouda cheese, chicken thighs, milk, and drinking water. The analysis showed that prices for individual products differ in each country:

  • Apples: Italy – 71 UAH/kg, Ukraine – 90 UAH/kg
  • Potatoes (bag): Italy – 79 UAH/kg, Ukraine – 77 UAH/kg
  • Bread: Italy – 88 UAH, Ukraine – 35 UAH
  • Eggs (dozen): Italy – 104 UAH, Ukraine – 73 UAH
  • Gouda cheese (150 g): Italy – 75 UAH, Ukraine – 70 UAH
  • Chicken thighs: Italy – 224 UAH/kg, Ukraine – 189 UAH/kg
  • Milk (1 L): Italy – 31 UAH, Ukraine – 57 UAH
  • Water (bottle): Italy – 9 UAH, Ukraine – 25 UAH

Total Cost and Income Ratio

The total amount for the same set of products was 831 UAH in Italy and 783 UAH in Ukraine. The price difference is 48 UAH or about 1 euro.

It is also important to consider the level of salaries. In 2024, the average salary in Italy varied by region and industry, ranging from 1300 to 1500 euros. In Ukraine, the average salary during this period was significantly lower – 480 to 500 euros.
