Growth of Changpeng Zhao’s Wealth: Key Factors

Experts note that over the past year, Changpeng Zhao’s capital has increased by approximately $47 billion, and he currently ranks 17th on the list of the world’s richest people, joining the elite club of individuals with fortunes exceeding $100 billion. The majority of his wealth is derived from about 90% of the shares in the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, which has an estimated market value of $100 billion according to Forbes.

In 2024, Zhao returned to active business after a four-month imprisonment related to violations of anti-money laundering legislation. At that time, he had to plead guilty and pay a $50 million fine, as well as step down as CEO of Binance.

“The bulk of his capital is tied to his approximately 90% stake in the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.”

Despite the change in leadership, the growth in Binance’s valuation has been the main factor behind Zhao’s increased wealth. In addition to his stake in the company, the businessman also owns around 1400 BTC worth approximately $100 million and significant reserves of the BNB token, although these assets represent a much smaller portion of his overall capital.

The Impact of Politics and Binance’s Market Achievements

Zhao’s wealth increase coincided with a shift in the political climate in the U.S. following Donald Trump’s return to power. In October 2025, Binance listed the USD1 stablecoin issued by World Liberty Financial, which has ties to the Trump family. That same month, President Trump signed a pardon for Zhao, legally lifting the restrictions related to the case against him. At the same time, Zhao stated that he has no intention of returning to the position of CEO of Binance.

Binance remains the market leader with a share of about 38% in the global cryptocurrency exchange industry. Analysts estimate that the company’s revenue in 2024–2025 reached $16–17 billion, while its direct competitor Coinbase earned around $6.6 billion. Each year, Binance processes over $30 trillion in transactions across spot and derivatives markets.

Despite impressive financial performance, the company continues to face criticism and new investigations. Recently, media reports have emerged regarding possible Binance operations with sanctioned Iranian organizations; however, the exchange has categorically denied these accusations, calling them “outright lies.”

In the ranking of the world’s richest people, Changpeng Zhao has surpassed well-known financiers such as Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Yass, and Ken Griffin. Bill Gates’ net worth is currently estimated at $108 billion, which is $2 billion less than Zhao’s. The leader of the billionaire index remains Elon Musk with a fortune of $839 billion.
