Bithumb Warns of Risks Following Attack on SK Telecom

Recently, hackers attacked the South Korean telecommunications company SK Telecom, leading to the leakage of confidential data related to users’ SIM cards. In response to this incident, the cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has implemented a series of measures to ensure the security of its clients.

Security Measures by Bithumb

Bithumb has introduced real-time monitoring of USIM card spoofing to protect its users from potential threats. As stated on the exchange’s official website:

“Bithumb is proactively responding to the SK Telecom incident so that you can safely use our services through real-time monitoring of USIM card spoofing.”

Additionally, the platform has strengthened its account protection policy, which includes:

  • identity verification in case of suspected use of a cloned phone;
  • notifications of successful account logins;
  • blocking access from foreign IP addresses;
  • monitoring accounts that may have been compromised in the leak;
  • real-time countermeasures against credential stuffing attacks.

Recommendations for Users

Bithumb has also provided a number of recommendations for users to prevent potential losses, including advice on connecting to the USIM card protection service and recommendations for replacing SIM cards in the event of a confirmed leak. As of today, it is unknown how many users have been affected by this incident.

It is worth noting that in March 2025, searches were conducted at Bithumb’s headquarters in Seoul, and a month later, the crypto service announced a restructuring ahead of its stock market debut.
