The CEO of the German media holding company Axel Springer SE, billionaire Matthias Döpfner, has reached an agreement to acquire the British publication The Telegraph for £575 million (approximately $766 million). End of Prolonged Uncertainty Surrounding The Telegraph
For nearly the last three years, there have been disputes and uncertainty regarding the future of The Telegraph. The newspaper has historically been associated with the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom, and its contributors have included notable political figures such as Winston Churchill and Boris Johnson. After the failure of a previous sale attempt through the RedBird IMI consortium—a joint venture between RedBird Capital Partners and UAE Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan—due to concerns about foreign influence on British media, the ownership issue remained unresolved. Even an attempt to purchase by the owner of the Daily Mail for £500 million was blocked by the Labour government due to the need for additional regulatory scrutiny.
Strategic Strengthening of Axel Springer’s Position
Axel Springer, which already owns influential media resources such as the German tabloid Bild, as well as the online publications Politico and Business Insider, is actively expanding its presence in Europe and the United States. The acquisition of The Telegraph allows the holding company to solidify its position in the British market and expand its international influence.
Currently, British authorities are reviewing the deal, and analysts believe that this time there are no concerns regarding foreign interference, as the buyer is known for having an “impeccable reputation.”
The newspaper demonstrates stable financial performance: in 2024, subscription revenue amounted to £81.1 million, which is an 18% increase compared to the previous year, while total revenue reached £279 million.
Thus, the acquisition of The Telegraph for £575 million strengthens Axel Springer’s position in the European market and creates a new platform for influence for Matthias Döpfner in the United Kingdom.
