During the historic ‘Artemis-2’ mission, NASA astronauts captured an impressive image of Earth as their spacecraft ‘Orion’ left low Earth orbit and headed towards the Moon. This shot resembles the legendary photograph ‘Earthrise’ taken by the Apollo 8 astronauts in 1968.

‘Artemis-2’ Mission: Journey to the Moon and a New Chapter in Space Exploration
The crew of four astronauts on the ‘Artemis-2’ mission continues their journey to the Moon following their launch on April 2. On the night of April 3, the ‘Orion’ spacecraft left low Earth orbit, and the team is currently on a trajectory that will allow them to perform a flyby of the Moon on April 6. A gravitational maneuver is planned to enable the astronauts to return to Earth on April 10-11.
NASA released a photograph showing Earth from space, along with a portion of the ‘Orion’ spacecraft. This image was taken while the spacecraft was still in low Earth orbit. This shot is already being referred to as symbolic, as it echoes the famous ‘Earthrise’ photo.
“This photograph recalls the iconic image from 1968 taken by the Apollo 8 astronauts, which has become a cultural landmark.”

Historical Parallels: From ‘Apollo 8’ to the Present
The photograph taken by the ‘Artemis-2’ astronauts evokes memories of the legendary ‘Earthrise’ image captured by astronaut Bill Anders from Apollo 8 on December 24, 1968, when the crew was orbiting the Moon. In that photograph, our planet appears above the lunar horizon, becoming a symbol of humanity’s unity and Earth’s vulnerability in the universe.

Perhaps the current astronauts will manage to capture an equally significant, if not unique, image during their flight. It is important to note that the Apollo 8 crew was the first to orbit the Moon but did not land on its surface, similar to the current participants of the ‘Artemis-2’ mission.
The four astronauts of this mission have already become the first people in the 21st century to leave low Earth orbit. If all flight stages are executed as planned, ‘Artemis-2’ will enter history as the first mission since 1972 to bring humans to the vicinity of the Moon and take them farther from Earth than ever before.
Previously, to exit low Earth orbit, the ‘Orion’ spacecraft performed a special maneuver. At the same time, it was reported that unexpected difficulties arose during the mission’s preparation; however, the crew continues to follow the planned flight program.
