Apple is preparing for significant changes in its new line of iPhone 18 smartphones, planning a complete transition to the use of eSIM instead of traditional physical SIM cards worldwide.

Elimination of the SIM slot and increased battery capacity
According to industry insiders, Apple intends to completely eliminate the SIM slot in the upcoming iPhone 18 models. This decision will free up more internal space within the device’s body, opening up possibilities for installing larger capacity batteries. A similar decision has already been implemented in the American versions of the iPhone 17 Pro, where the absence of a SIM card slot allowed for a slight increase in battery size.
“According to insiders, the experiment has been deemed successful, so the company is reportedly planning to extend this practice to the entire iPhone 18 series. At the same time, analysts note that a complete transition to eSIM may pose challenges for certain markets where this technology has not yet become widespread. Whether Apple will make exceptions for specific countries is currently unknown.”
Technical innovations and presentation date
The most powerful model in the lineup — the iPhone 18 Pro Max — is expected to feature a battery capacity of around 5100–5200 mAh. While this is less than some current smartphones made in China, such capacity would represent a significant step forward for Apple. Additionally, among other innovations, a thinner Dynamic Island, a larger body, cameras with variable aperture, and the latest A20 Pro processors manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process are anticipated.
According to preliminary forecasts, the presentation of the iPhone 18 Pro models is scheduled for September, while the basic versions of the smartphones are likely to be available for sale no earlier than March of next year.
