Apple Implements Artificial Intelligence in the Development of Its Own Chips to Enhance Efficiency

Apple has announced plans to use generative artificial intelligence to optimize the design processes of its chips, which are used in the iPhone, Mac, and Vision Pro. This was stated by Johny Srouji, Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies at the company, during an awards ceremony at the Belgian research center Imec.

Artificial Intelligence and Automation in Microelectronics

According to Srouji, Apple’s success story in chip creation—from the A4 model to the latest developments—is largely due to the implementation of modern Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. The company is currently focusing on integrating AI to further increase design workload and reduce execution time.

Cadence and Synopsys are leading companies in the EDA tools market, actively utilizing artificial intelligence in their products. Srouji emphasized that partnerships with such players are critically important for executing Apple’s complex initiatives in the field of microelectronics.

Strategic Decisions and Technological Leadership

Apple expects that the application of generative AI methods will significantly enhance efficiency in chip development, which is particularly relevant in light of increasingly complex systems and the growing demand for customized solutions. A company representative highlighted the importance of these technologies in supporting the corporation’s innovative potential.

Johny Srouji also recalled the defining decision made by the company in 2020—the transition of the Mac lineup from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon ARM chips. This move was made without a backup plan, meaning the company consciously took a serious risk that required a massive transformation of its software infrastructure.

“We went all in. There was no backup plan,” Srouji stated.

He emphasized that such strategic risks allow Apple to maintain its position as a technological leader in the global market. According to him, the company intends to remain at the forefront of innovation and continue developing its own technologies.
