Agricultural Sector of Chernihiv Region Recovers to 95% and Shows Record Exports

Over the past three years, Chernihiv region has almost completely restored its agricultural production volumes, reaching 95% of the pre-war level. In 2024, the agricultural sector of the region is demonstrating significant growth, particularly due to a record grain harvest of 5 million tons — 26% more than in 2022.

Importance of the Agricultural Sector for the Region’s Economy

The agro-industrial complex accounts for over 80% of Chernihiv’s exports. The export base consists primarily of plant-based products. By the end of 2024, foreign currency earnings from agricultural product exports exceeded 800 million US dollars.

Financial inflows to the budgets have also significantly increased. Tax payments from agricultural enterprises have risen by 54% compared to 2022, while contributions to local budgets have increased by more than 25%. The government has provided record support to farmers — 355 million hryvnias. The funds were directed towards grants for the development of processing enterprises, horticulture, greenhouse farming, compensation for the purchase of Ukrainian machinery, loans, subsidies, and micro-grants for small businesses.

Successful Cases of Small Agricultural Business Development

A notable example of effective government support is entrepreneur Dmytro Hlushd from Chernihiv region, who took advantage of the “Own Business” grant program and opened his own mini-farm for raising chickens for sale in 2024. With the grant funds, the farmer purchased the necessary equipment and materials, including a granulator, a poultry slaughter kit, nipple drinkers, an incubator, feed, and chicks.

“The farmer has already sold the first 650 broilers. The entrepreneur’s immediate plans include increasing the number of chickens to 2,000 and installing a heating system.”

Thus, the agricultural sector of Chernihiv region is not only restoring pre-war capacities but also increasing production, exports, and investments in the development of small and medium-sized businesses.
