Active Use of Bank Cards by Ukrainians is Increasing

In Ukraine, an increasing number of citizens are opting for cashless payments, as confirmed by data from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). In the first quarter of 2025, there has been a significant increase in both the number and volume of cashless transactions made using payment cards.

Card Usage Statistics in Ukraine

According to statistics, from January to March, there were 2,191.3 million transactions with payment cards, which is 12.3% more compared to the same period in 2024, when this figure was 1,950.9 million. Among these transactions, 2,086.4 million were cashless, reflecting a growth of 13.5% compared to last year.

The total amount of transactions in the first quarter of 2025 reached 1,646.5 billion hryvnias, which is a significant increase compared to 1,489.7 billion hryvnias in 2024. Cashless transactions accounted for 1,073.5 billion hryvnias, with an increase of 11.7% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

Popularity of Cashless Payments

Thus, 95 out of 100 card transactions were cashless. The largest share of transactions using cards, both in terms of amount and quantity, was recorded in the retail sector, where 1,521.4 million transactions were made for a total of 523.6 billion hryvnias. At the same time, online payments for goods and services accounted for 16.2% by amount and 14.4% by quantity.

Transfers from card to card in the first quarter accounted for less than a third of the total amount (28.1%), which is a decrease compared to 32.9% the previous year, and by quantity, less than a tenth (7.8% compared to 8.9% last year).

The average amount of a transaction in the retail sector was 344 hryvnias (327 hryvnias in the first quarter of last year), while for card-to-card transfers it was 1,845 hryvnias (1,931 hryvnias), and in online retail it was 580 hryvnias (541 hryvnias).
