In 2026, five biomethane plants with a capacity of 20 million cubic meters will open in Ukraine

In 2026, Ukraine plans to put into operation five new biomethane plants with a total capacity of 20 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. The head of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, Georgiy Geletukha, noted that the domestic biomethane market has only just begun to develop, and the export of this product abroad started relatively recently. Ukrainian entrepreneurs are cautiously investing in biomethane projects while monitoring the market situation.

Challenges with biomethane export to the EU

Companies that are already exporting biomethane to European Union countries face numerous bureaucratic procedures during gas transportation. In addition, producers need to prove that their biomethane meets EU requirements, complicating the process of entering the European market.

Cost and financial support for producers

According to the expert, there is a steady demand for Ukrainian biomethane in the EU, and the national regulatory framework is already prepared to support exports. However, in Ukraine, producers are deprived of the “green premium” – a special financial supplement that should ensure the competitiveness of clean energy. As a result, instead of a potential price of €900 per 1,000 cubic meters of biomethane, producers receive €750-800 for the same amount, while the production cost is about €650 per 1,000 cubic meters.

“According to him, Ukraine started exporting biomethane relatively recently, and domestic entrepreneurs are not rushing to invest massively in biomethane projects, monitoring the situation.”
