Zelensky Congratulates the Tisza Party and Peter Madyar on Election Victory in Hungary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky officially congratulated Peter Madyar and his political force, the Tisza Party, on their victory in the parliamentary elections in Hungary. In his statement, Zelensky emphasized the importance of a constructive approach and Ukraine’s readiness to develop good-neighborly relations with Hungary.

“I congratulate Peter Madyar and the TISZA party on their convincing victory. It is important when a constructive approach wins. Ukraine has always sought good-neighborly relations with everyone in Europe, and we are ready to develop cooperation with Hungary,” he wrote in a telegram.

The President also highlighted that the Ukrainian side is open to dialogue, meetings, and constructive cooperation for the mutual prosperity of both nations, as well as for peace, security, and stability on the European continent.

Election Results and Political Changes in Hungary

The parliamentary elections in Hungary took place on April 12. According to the National Election Office, voter turnout reached a record 77.8% by 6:30 PM. After counting over 63% of the votes, the Tisza Party received 138 parliamentary mandates. In comparison, the ruling party prior to this, Fidesz, secured 54 seats, while the political force Our Homeland gained 7 mandates.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban acknowledged the defeat of his political force and announced the party’s transition to opposition. Under Hungary’s current electoral system, the majority of deputies (106 out of 199) are elected in single-member districts by simple majority, while 93 mandates are distributed among parties that have surpassed the five percent threshold.
