In Ukraine, there has been a noticeable decrease in wholesale prices for greenhouse cucumbers over the past week. This is due to the warm and sunny weather, which has significantly accelerated the ripening of vegetables in greenhouse farms. As a result, producers have been able to substantially increase the volumes of cucumbers supplied to the market.
This is reported by Finway
“Closer to the end of last week, cucumbers were sold for 125-165 UAH/kg ($2.85-3.77 per kg), which is on average 10% cheaper than a week ago.”
The Impact of Imports and Domestic Production
In addition to the increase in domestic supply, the formation of prices is influenced by imported products. Imported cucumbers are entering the market at a price of up to 100 UAH per kg ($2.28 per kg), which creates additional pressure on the cost of Ukrainian vegetables and forces producers to lower prices to remain competitive.
Demand, Future Prospects, and Comparison with Last Year
Despite the decrease in prices, the overall demand for greenhouse vegetables remains relatively low, as consumers are still cautiously purchasing products due to their high cost. Producers note that if favorable weather conditions persist, supply volumes may increase even further, potentially leading to additional price reductions.
At the same time, greenhouse cucumbers are currently still 25% more expensive than during the same period last year. This indicates the persistence of high production costs, as well as the influence of seasonal and import factors on pricing policy.
In addition to cucumbers, the first batches of local greenhouse tomatoes have already appeared on the Ukrainian market, which has also begun to affect the price dynamics of newly harvested vegetables.
