Ukrainian coins with a denomination of 5 kopecks, issued in the early years of independence, generate significant interest among numismatists. Especially valued are the specimens from 1992 with the rare variety 1.1AAk, whose market value can range from 4,000 to 10,000 hryvnias.

Signs of the Rare 5 Kopecks Coin from 1992
Experts from the “Moneti-Yahidky” resource explain that the valuable variety of 5 kopecks can be distinguished by several characteristic features:
- The middle prong of the trident on the reverse has a thickening at the top;
- The number “1” in the date has a characteristic tail;
- Cluster No. 2 is shaped like a right triangle;
- The edge of the coin has a large milling.
“Due to a minting error, a small number of coins received a large milling on the edge. It is these 5 kopecks that numismatists buy at a high price. If the edge has a fine milling – then it is the variety 1.1AAm, such a coin is very common and therefore worth nothing,” the experts explained.
Will the Design of 1 and 2 Hryvnia Coins Change
The National Bank of Ukraine currently does not plan to change the design of 1 and 2 hryvnia coins, although preparations for this began even before the full-scale invasion. At the same time, the NBU has not completely abandoned this idea, and will revisit the issue after stabilizing the situation in the country.
Deputy Head of the NBU Oleksiy Shaban noted that both public organizations and associations of people with disabilities have approached the regulator with requests to change the design. However, due to martial law, this process is currently on hold. Discussions about changes may begin after the active phase of the conflict ends, so in the future, Ukrainians may see an updated look for the 1 or 2 hryvnia coins, or both at once.
