Ukrzaliznytsia plans to purchase British Steel rails for infrastructure modernization

JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” requires about 60 thousand tons of rails annually, and currently, the possibility of supplying this product from the British company British Steel is being considered. This was reported by the Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine and the Minister for Communities and Territories Development, Oleksii Kuleba.

Potential cooperation with British Steel and grant supply format

Ukraine is interested in attracting a grant mechanism for the supply of railway rails. This approach will significantly accelerate the modernization of transport infrastructure without additional financial burden on the state budget. The supply issue was discussed during Oleksii Kuleba’s meeting with Kieran Mather, the UK Minister for Aviation, Maritime Transport, and Decarbonization, which took place at the end of last week.

Support for Ukraine within international initiatives

During the negotiations, the parties discussed the main areas of restoring Ukraine’s transport infrastructure, including road, maritime, aviation, and railway sectors. Among the key topics was participation in implementing projects within the Infrastructure Taskforce. Oleksii Kuleba urged the British side to contribute to the Ukraine Transport Support Fund, in the creation of which the United Kingdom participated by signing a relevant declaration at the beginning of 2026. The possibility of launching one of the infrastructure projects of this fund was also considered.

Separately, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of further cooperation with UKEF — the UK government’s export credit agency — for implementing new projects in the transport sector, particularly in maritime and aviation directions.

Ukraine has identified among its main priorities in the maritime sector the renewal of the fleet, the development of port infrastructure, the implementation of safety and digital solutions, as well as the realization of public-private partnerships in ports.
