Preparation for possible attacks on critical infrastructure
Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine Oleksii Kuleba noted that Russia has repeatedly threatened to strike water supply facilities, but it is currently impossible to predict the exact time or location of these attacks. According to him, the Ukrainian government is actively preparing for potential emergencies related to water supply disruptions.
“It is important to understand: water is a matter of basic security. While we can live with restrictions on electricity, the situation with water is much more complicated. Therefore, we are preparing the system to withstand strikes and recover quickly,” Kuleba said.
Protective measures and real consequences of attacks
The Cabinet of Ministers is developing a set of protective measures to preserve water supply in the event of shelling. This includes protecting infrastructure facilities, preparing backup power sources, developing distributed generation, and implementing alternative water supply schemes. These measures are already being implemented across the country to minimize risks for the population.
Recently, there was an attack by the Russian armed forces on industrial, civilian, and energy facilities in the Odesa region, which caused disruptions in water supply in the area. The problem was particularly acute in Odesa, where residents of some districts were left without water due to the de-energization of part of the water supply system.
In this regard, the government recommends that Ukrainians maintain a basic supply of water and be prepared for possible restrictions in water supply in the event of new attacks on infrastructure.
