Since the beginning of 2025, Ukraine has increased its natural gas imports to a record 1.12 billion cubic meters. This is ten times more than in the same period last year, when the import volume was only 118 million cubic meters.
This is reported by Finway
The rise in imports is driven by the need to secure resources for the heating season of 2024-2025, especially after damage to gas production due to Russian attacks in February. In particular, in February, gas imports reached 512 million cubic meters, the highest level since September 2023.
Main Gas Suppliers for Ukraine
To prepare for the upcoming heating season, Ukraine is actively importing gas to build winter reserves. Hungary has become the main gas supplier, providing 669 million cubic meters, which accounts for nearly 60% of the total import volume. Slovakia supplied 261 million cubic meters (23%), while Poland contributed 190 million cubic meters (17%).
Gas Imports by Naftogaz Group
The largest volume of gas was imported by the Naftogaz Group, which accounted for nearly 900 million cubic meters, representing 80% of all imports since the beginning of the year. Individual private companies also imported gas for further sale at the auctions of
“Ukrtransgaz”
through the Ukrainian Energy Exchange.
In April and May, the sole importer of natural gas is NAK
“Naftogaz of Ukraine”
, which plans to import over 400 million cubic meters of gas from Hungary and Poland in May.
