Ukraine Plans to Import Over 4 Billion Cubic Meters of Gas from Europe Due to Shortage

As a result of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure this winter, Ukraine is forced to consider additional imports of natural gas from European countries, which could cost the state nearly 2 billion dollars. This information is confirmed by sources in the Ukrainian energy sector.

Energy War and Financial Consequences

The armed confrontation between Russia and Ukraine is causing significant damage to both sides. Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries lead to economic losses for the aggressor, while systematic shelling of Ukraine’s energy facilities creates serious problems for the country’s energy system. Following the latest attacks, Ukraine is compelled to seek additional sources of gas to cover the deficit caused by damage to networks and energy facilities.

International Support and Import Volumes

As reported by Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk, Ukraine is currently negotiating with international partners to increase natural gas imports by approximately 30%. Agreements have already been reached for loans from European financial institutions amounting to 800 million euros (about 930 million US dollars), and the possibility of expanding these loans to overcome the energy crisis is being considered.

According to estimates from energy sector representatives, by the end of the current heating season, Ukraine will likely need over 4 billion cubic meters of gas, the cost of which at current market prices will be around 2 billion dollars. Most of this resource is planned to be purchased from European suppliers.

“This is in addition to equipment for repairing facilities that are constantly under fire. Most of this additional import will come from Europe,” the article notes.
