Ukraine Prepares to Implement Small Modular Reactors for Energy

The Ministry of Energy has announced its support for the implementation of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Ukraine. An interdepartmental working group has already been formed to develop a phased plan for the realization of this strategic direction.

Partnership and Prospects for Energy

First Deputy Minister of Energy Artem Nekrasov reported on active cooperation with American partners regarding the placement of SMRs at Ukrainian thermal power plants and large enterprises that consume significant amounts of energy. This initiative was presented during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on energy and housing and communal services, where the relevant draft law was also discussed.

Innovative Projects “Phoenix” and “Hephaestus”

Small modular reactors are currently considered a promising but relatively new technology that is only going through research and demonstration project stages worldwide. Only a few countries have already taken practical steps towards their construction. In Ukraine, the implementation of SMRs will occur within two key projects:

  • The “Phoenix” project – aimed at transforming the energy sector by gradually transitioning from coal-fired power plants to the installation of small modular reactors.
  • The “Hephaestus” project – focuses on modernizing the metallurgical industry through innovative solutions and the implementation of safe SMR technologies.

Small modular reactors are a promising but still relatively new technology for the entire world, currently at the stage of research and demonstration projects, with practical steps towards their construction already initiated in a few countries.

These projects are expected to not only ensure the sustainable development of Ukrainian energy but also enhance the energy efficiency of the industry through the implementation of modern and environmentally safe nuclear technologies.
