Ukraine Implements European Standards for Quality Control of Gasoline with Bioethanol

Ukraine has launched a large-scale reform in the field of automotive fuel, aiming to implement modern European Union standards for quality control of gasoline, particularly with a significant share of bioethanol. This is linked to the country’s plans to expand the use of renewable energy sources in the transport sector.

Adaptation of Legislation to EU Requirements and New Standards

As part of the reform, the authorities aim to align Ukrainian legislation with the European directives RED-II and RED-III, which define the rules for the use of renewable energy resources in transport. One of the key steps will be the implementation of European standards EN 228 and EN 590, as well as a phased abandonment of outdated Euro-3 and Euro-4 environmental classes. In addition, it is planned to change the fuel labeling system – traditional designations such as A-80 or A-92 may gradually disappear from gas stations, giving way to European standards.

Expanded Use of Bioethanol and Updating Laboratory Procedures

A separate area of change concerns the regulation of gasoline with an increased bioethanol content – from 10% to 50%. To ensure proper control of such fuels, Ukraine will improve laboratory testing methods, modernize equipment, and sampling procedures to ensure compliance with European requirements.

Features of Diesel Fuel and Climatic Conditions

In implementing EU standards, Ukraine will maintain separate control over the temperature characteristics of diesel fuel. This is due to the need to consider the climate specifics and risks for transport during the winter period. According to representatives of the relevant ministry, updating fuel standards is an important component of the country’s Euro-integration and will contribute to improving fuel quality in the domestic market.

It should be noted that since May 1, gas stations in Ukraine have maintained retail prices for gasoline following the entry into force of the requirement for the mandatory addition of 5% bioethanol to gasoline with an octane rating below 98.
