Ukraine has submitted an official request to the IMF for a new funding program

The Ukrainian government has initiated an official appeal to the International Monetary Fund requesting the start of a new funding program for the country. This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko after a meeting with IMF representatives who were in Kyiv over the past week.

Ukraine expects support from the IMF in the coming years

As Svyrydenko noted, in the context of ongoing hostilities and the formation of the state budget for 2026, which takes into account current military threats, Ukraine requires new financial support. The Prime Minister emphasized that the country has already undergone a record eight reviews of the current program with the IMF and thanked the Fund for its sustained assistance during the full-scale war.

“Ukraine has undergone a record eight reviews under the current program. I am grateful to the IMF for its support throughout these years of full-scale invasion. However, active hostilities continue, and the draft budget for 2026 has been formed with the understanding that the war is far from over.”

During the meeting, an official letter requesting a new cooperation program, which aims to ensure Ukraine’s financial stability over the next few years, was handed to the head of the IMF mission, Gavin Gray. Svyrydenko clarified that consultations between government teams and IMF representatives will continue over the coming months to achieve a positive decision from the Fund’s Board of Directors by the end of the year.

Current cooperation with the IMF and financial assistance

The specific amount that the government is counting on under the new program is currently not disclosed. According to the Ministry of Finance, under the current extended funding program, Ukraine has already received nine tranches totaling approximately $10.6 billion out of the planned $15.5 billion that are to be provided between 2023 and 2027.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the IMF ranks third in terms of financial assistance to Ukraine, following only the European Union and the United States. This underscores the strategic importance of Ukraine’s cooperation with international financial institutions to ensure the country’s macroeconomic stability amid Russia’s military aggression.
