Conviction of Ukrainian Soldiers in Russia
Investigators established that in September 2025, the aforementioned judges issued sentences to fighters from the 95th Air Assault Brigade and the 21st Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who were captured during combat operations. The Ukrainian soldiers were sentenced to 16 years in prison. According to the prosecution, they were punished solely for participating in the war on the side of Ukraine.
“International law explicitly prohibits punishing prisoners of war for participating in combat. Despite this, the judges used the court as a tool for punishment and legitimization of illegal detention.”
Investigations into Russian Judges Continue
Ukrainian law enforcement agencies regularly report on new investigations regarding the actions of Russian judges who issue sentences against Ukrainian military personnel and civilians. In particular, in September 2025, the Security Service of Ukraine announced in absentia charges against Judge Konstantin Prosto of the Southern Military Court of Russia due to sentences against the defenders of Mariupol.
