U.S. President Donald Trump drew attention during a state dinner in honor of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi, which took place in the White House State Dining Room. Journalists noticed that the president uses foundation to conceal bruises and spots on his hands.

Trump’s Health Raises Questions
An experienced photographer captured visible bruises on the 79-year-old Donald Trump’s hands, which he attempted to hide with a thick layer of makeup. Even his left hand, which usually appears healthy, had noticeable makeup. The day before, journalists had noted a brown spot on the president’s left hand during a lunch with members of the Kennedy Center board in the White House East Room.
In January, Trump explained that the appearance of bruises is related to taking aspirin at a dose that exceeds standard medical recommendations. He takes 325 milligrams of the medication daily, while the commonly accepted dose is 81 milligrams.
“They want me to take a lower dose. I take a higher one, but I’ve been doing it for many years, and it causes bruises,” Trump told reporters.
The White House also noted that the bruises on the president’s hands could be a result of frequent and firm handshakes.
Media Discussion and Doctors’ Diagnoses
Trump’s bruises were also noticeable during his meeting with Takaiichi on March 19, which was part of strengthening the strategic alliance between the U.S. and Japan. In early 2026, the president admitted that he applies concealer or foundation himself to cover up marks on his skin. “I have makeup that, you know, is easy to apply, it takes about 10 seconds,” Trump noted.
The media also pointed out the appearance of swelling in the president’s legs, which is particularly noticeable while he is seated. Last summer, the White House reported that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency—a condition in which the veins in the legs poorly return blood to the heart. The president mentioned that he tried wearing compression socks to reduce swelling, but he “didn’t like them,” so he prefers to take more frequent walks.
In response to questions about Donald Trump’s health, the White House stated that he is “the most perceptive, accessible, and energetic president in modern American history.”
At the same time, doctors suggest that the president’s current health condition may be linked to serious issues, including the possibility of frontotemporal dementia.
