In particular, the UK has banned the export of game console controllers, which, according to government information, are used to operate drones during combat. As stated by the UK’s sanctions minister, Stephen Doughty:

“Today we are using all our capabilities to choke off the Russian war machine, save lives in Ukraine, and protect British businesses from cynical Russian exploitation”

.

The new sanctions package also includes a ban on the export of chemicals, electronics, machinery, and metals, aimed at limiting the military and industrial capabilities of Russia.

Consequences of the New Restrictions

Politico noted that these sanctions are aimed at cutting off access to innovative technologies and software used in the Russian defense and energy sectors. The ban on the export of controllers for video games, which the Russian military uses for drones, is a significant part of this package.

Doughty also emphasized that cutting off Russia’s energy revenues will significantly deplete Putin’s resources.

“We are halting the sale of sophisticated software that helps profit from new oil and gas reserves, preventing the use of British expertise to fuel the Russian war machine”

.

Thus, the new sanctions from the United Kingdom represent an important step in the international community’s efforts to counter Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
