Suspect Arrested in Israel for Spying for Iran in Exchange for Cryptocurrency

In Tel Aviv, law enforcement officials have arrested a local resident suspected of spying for Iran in exchange for cryptocurrency rewards. According to the police and the Security Service “Shabak”, the man received instructions from an Iranian agent with whom he maintained contact for several months.

Suspect Collected Intelligence Data and Created Political Graffiti

The investigation revealed that the arrested individual photographed residential buildings of Israeli officials, military sites, and also painted political graffiti on walls. All these actions, according to the intelligence services, were carried out in accordance with the received instructions. Law enforcement claims that the man received thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency for completing these tasks.

During a search of the suspect’s apartment, computers and other digital devices, likely used for communication with Iranian handlers, were seized.

“Individuals engaged in espionage activities against the state of Israel will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” stated the Security Service and police.

Arrest Amid Cyber Tensions Between Israel and Iran

A court in Tel Aviv has ordered the suspect to be held in custody at least until June 26, 2025, while the investigation continues. In an official statement, the police and “Shabak” urged citizens to be vigilant, as Iranian intelligence services and associated terrorist organizations are actively recruiting Israelis through social media.

Cyber tensions between Israel and Iran are escalating. Last week, a pro-Israel hacker group announced the hacking of the Iranian cryptocurrency exchange Nobitex and the withdrawal of approximately $90 million in cryptocurrencies, accusing the platform of collaborating with Iranian intelligence. Following this, the Central Bank of Iran restricted the operating hours of cryptocurrency exchanges in the country.
