In summer, short-term power outages may occur due to heat – energy expert

In the event of a sharp rise in air temperature to +35 degrees Celsius and above this summer in Ukraine, short-term restrictions on electricity consumption may be introduced. However, it is currently difficult to predict whether these measures will specifically affect the population.

Potential Restrictions and Risks for Cities

As noted by the director of the Energy Research Center, Oleksandr Kharchenko, during the summer heat, there may be restrictions on electricity supply during certain hours, but their scale will not be critical for the country as a whole. The expert advises paying special attention to large cities such as Kyiv, Odesa, and Kryvyi Rih, as the risks of power supply disruptions during periods of abnormal heat may be elevated.

“I cannot predict attacks. But if temperatures reach +35 degrees Celsius and above, restrictions may occur during certain hours. I cannot say whether the population will need to be restricted, and it is impossible to predict this now,” Kharchenko said.

State of the Energy System and Repair Work

According to Kharchenko, the main difficulty currently lies in the condition of the country’s thermal power plants. Ukraine has lost a significant portion of its generating capacity, which has not yet been restored, although this process is ongoing. Additionally, scheduled repair work is taking place at nuclear power plants, the schedule of which has been drawn up with the return of capacities to the grid in July-August in mind. The restoration of large hydroelectric power stations is also continuing.

Thus, energy workers are preparing for potential challenges during the summer period to minimize risks for consumers in case of hot weather.
