The American-British project Start Campus, implemented by Davidson Kempner and Pioneer Point Partners, has announced an investment of €8.5 billion to create a data center in the city of Sintra, located 150 km south of Lisbon. One of the six planned buildings is already operational.

Among the reasons for the increase in investments in data centers is the heightened demand for computing power that arose after the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in 2022. Many companies from various sectors are actively transitioning to cloud solutions and integrating artificial intelligence into their products.
The importance of the project for the Portuguese economy
The acting Minister of Economy of Portugal, Pedro Reis, emphasized that the project is considered “a structural investment in the Portuguese economy that will help Portugal take a strategic position in the data economy, leveraging the advantages of Sintra’s privileged geographical location.”
