Government actions regarding asset security and the official status of bitcoin
In September 2021, El Salvador recognized bitcoin as an official means of payment, and since then, the country has been regularly increasing its cryptocurrency reserves. Last week, the government distributed the existing bitcoins among 14 new addresses to mitigate potential risks associated with the development of quantum technologies. Officials emphasized that this measure is aimed at enhancing the security of digital asset storage.
At the same time, in July 2025, the International Monetary Fund released a report stating that the Salvadoran authorities had not made any additional bitcoin purchases since at least February 2025. Thus, the current purchase is the first in several months and occurred on this symbolic date.
