Estimates of Russian army losses from various sources

Official Moscow does not disclose its losses in the war. The last time Russian officials published figures was in September 2022, stating 5,937 dead. Independent Russian media “Meduza” and “Mediazona” estimate Russia’s losses by the end of 2025 at 352,000 people based on open data and registries. Of these, 261,000 are confirmed dead, while 90,000 are missing or declared dead by court decision.

“Mediazona” compiles named lists of the deceased together with a team of volunteers and the Russian service of the BBC, also using data from the Russian Inheritance Registry.

Journalists have confirmed the names of at least 212,188 Russian servicemen who have died since February 2022, based on open sources. At the same time, international organizations and intelligence provide significantly higher estimates. In particular, in December 2025, a NATO representative reported that the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could reach 1.15 million people.

Ukraine has long refrained from disclosing its own losses; however, approximately once a year, this information is made public by President Volodymyr Zelensky. In February 2026, he reported that since February 2022, Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers. At the same time, there are a significant number of individuals considered missing.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, noted that in 2025, personnel losses were reduced by 13%. However, more detailed data on the total number of losses is not disclosed.
