Comparative Assessment of Losses: Russia, Ukraine, and International Data

Russia does not officially disclose its losses. The last time Moscow provided such data was in September 2022, when it claimed 5,937 dead. Meanwhile, according to investigations by Russian journalists, as of February 24, 2026, the names of over 200,000 Russian soldiers killed in the war against Ukraine have been identified. The establishment of death facts is based on open sources, such as obituaries, social media posts, and announcements regarding missing persons.

Estimates from international organizations and intelligence regarding total Russian losses significantly exceed official figures. In particular, in December 2025, a NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that according to the alliance, the number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could reach 1.15 million individuals.

“In Ukraine, the officially reported number of soldiers killed on the battlefield, whether career or mobilized, stands at 55,000,” said Zelensky.

Ukraine also refrained from disclosing data about its own losses for a long time, citing security concerns, but currently, President Volodymyr Zelensky provides relevant information annually. In early February 2026, he reported that since February 2022, Ukraine has lost 55,000 servicemen killed, and emphasized the significant number of missing persons.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, noted in January this year that in 2025, the level of personnel losses in the Armed Forces of Ukraine was reduced by 13%, although he did not provide detailed information.
