Various estimates of losses and Moscow’s official position

Russia officially does not disclose its losses, having last published these figures in September 2022, when it reported 5,937 dead. However, independent Russian media “Meduza” and “Mediazona” estimated Russian losses at the end of 2025 at 352,000 personnel based on named lists, of which 261,000 are confirmed dead, and another 90,000 are those recognized as dead or missing by court decision or after significant delays in death registration.

Estimates of total Russian losses (wounded and killed) from international organizations and intelligence agencies are significantly higher. In December 2025, a NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the BBC Russian service that, according to the alliance, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could approach 1.15 million personnel.

British intelligence in its report for May 2026 stated that nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers had died since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

On the Ukrainian side, official information about losses is published rarely. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, as of early February 2026, 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died, and a significant number are considered missing.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi reported in January 2026 that in 2025, personnel losses were reduced by 13%, although no specific figures were provided.
