Casualty Estimates and Official Data
Russia does not disclose official data regarding its losses. The last time Moscow publicly reported the number of fatalities was in September 2022, when it announced 5,937 military deaths. However, independent investigators and journalists note that the actual losses are significantly higher.
“Meanwhile, journalists from the Russian publication ‘Mediazona’, the Russian service of the BBC, and a team of volunteers have identified over 173,000 names of Russian military personnel who have died in the war since February 2022, based on open sources as of February 6 of this year.”
Journalists emphasize that this list is not exhaustive, as not all information about the deaths of servicemen becomes public.
International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate Russia’s losses even higher. According to information presented by a NATO representative in December 2025, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army may approach 1.15 million personnel. Additionally, in November 2025, the average daily losses for Russia were around 1,100 military personnel.
The Ukrainian side traditionally does not disclose its losses during the war; however, in early February 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that since February 2022, Ukraine has lost 55,000 military personnel killed. He also noted that a significant number of people are considered missing in action.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi stated in January 2026 that in 2025, the number of personnel losses in the Armed Forces of Ukraine was reduced by 13%, but he did not provide additional details regarding Ukrainian losses.
