Romania Acquires the Giurgiulești Port and Plans Major Modernization

The Romanian government has completed the agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of Danube Logistics, the operator of the Giurgiulești port in Moldova. The shares were purchased from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), allowing Romania to fully control this strategic port facility on the Danube.

Confirmation of the Agreement and Future Plans

The Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Moldova has confirmed the legality of this agreement, emphasizing that it pertains solely to the port operator — Danube Logistics. The land on which the port is located remains state property of Moldova.

“The agreement concerns only the private operator of the port (Danube Logistics) and does not cover the land owned by the state.”

Investments and Strategic Importance

The final value of the agreement will be approved on February 11, 2026. Romania has announced its intention to invest over 24 million euros in the modernization of the Giurgiulești port infrastructure. Key objectives include integrating the port into Romania’s logistics network, expanding its capacities, and enhancing the region’s role in international transport corridors connecting the Danube and the Black Sea.

The Giurgiulești port, located 133.8 km from the Black Sea on the left bank of the Prut and Danube rivers, was established in 2006 after Ukraine transferred 430 meters of Danube and Prut shoreline to Moldova. It remains the only port in Moldova with access to the Black Sea, highlighting its strategic importance for the region.
