“We discussed the next steps for the EU to strengthen sanctions pressure on Russia. We expect that they will be truly powerful and hit Putin’s military budget,”
US Position on Sanctions and Negotiations
While the EU is preparing for another round of sanctions pressure, the United States currently has no plans for new economic restrictions against the Russian Federation. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that Washington aims to keep room for negotiations regarding a possible peace agreement.
According to Rubio, if the American side supports the tough sanctions that allies expect at the NATO summit in The Hague, it could complicate dialogue regarding a ceasefire. He emphasized that Donald Trump still controls the situation and will determine the best moment to implement new economic measures if necessary.
Rejection of Russia’s Military Ambitions
Furthermore, the US Secretary of State stressed that Washington does not agree with Moscow’s position on the possibility of achieving its territorial goals through military means. This underscores the unwavering support for Ukraine and readiness for further actions in case of escalation by the Russian Federation.
