Polygon announces Gigagas roadmap to increase throughput to 100,000 TPS

The developers of the blockchain platform Polygon have presented an extensive Gigagas roadmap, which aims to significantly increase the network’s throughput to 100,000 transactions per second (TPS). The first step on this path will be the Bhilai hard fork, which is scheduled for implementation in the mainnet in July 2025.

Bhilai Hard Fork and Polygon’s Mid-term Goals

The Bhilai hard fork, which has already been successfully tested on the Amoy network, will serve as the starting phase for the implementation of Gigagas. It is expected that after the launch of the update, Polygon’s throughput will increase to 1,000 TPS, the transaction finalization time will be reduced from 60–90 seconds to five, and gas price spikes will be eliminated.

In the medium term, the team plans to achieve 5,000 TPS by October of this year, ensure transaction finalization within one second, and integrate the Agglayer layer to develop cross-chain liquidity — this will make asset exchange between different blockchains more efficient.

Strategic Plans and Positioning of Polygon

The main goal of the Gigagas initiative is to reach the milestone of 100,000 transactions per second and transform Polygon PoS into a leading network for transactions in stablecoins and tokenization of real-world assets (RWA). The team also emphasizes attracting institutional clients and major partners in the stablecoin sector.

According to the developers, the market capitalization of stablecoins on the Polygon PoS network has exceeded $2.5 billion, and as of June 2025, this amount stands at $2.64 billion. This growth, along with the expansion of collaboration with major market participants, opens up broad opportunities for the further development of the project.

In the first quarter of 2025, Polygon PoS entered the top five blockchains by market capitalization of tokenized real-world assets (RWA). Achieving the milestone of 5,000 TPS is planned through the implementation of the VEBloP model, which optimizes the block formation process and eliminates the risk of network reorganization, which is critical for attracting institutional investors and launching large-scale products.

“The Polygon roadmap represents an arc that begins with solving today’s problems and ends with Polygon providing an open economy without borders for daily use by millions of people,” the project team explained.

The updated development strategy was announced shortly after Sandeep Nailwal took over the organization of the Polygon Foundation. The team emphasizes that the focus will be on promoting Polygon PoS and Agglayer solutions, while support for zkEVM will cease in 2026.
