Potential routes and strategic significance
European officials note that in the future, several new railway routes are planned. They will allow direct connections between Poland and Kyiv, as well as provide convenient transit from Central Europe through Uzhhorod to the southern regions of Ukraine, including Odesa. This step is expected to enhance Ukraine’s transport integration with the European space and provide additional opportunities for passenger and freight transportation.
“The European Commission emphasizes that new transport projects are planned with security factors in mind – the infrastructure must not only be built but also properly protected.”
Development of transport infrastructure and additional directions
After 2022, the European Union expanded the TEN-T transport network, officially including Ukrainian transport corridors, particularly routes to Odesa. The so-called ‘Solidarity Lanes’ played an important role in this, ensuring the export of Ukrainian goods amid the blockade of sea ports.
The EU also emphasizes the need for further development of border infrastructure, inland waterways, sea ports, and in the future – Ukrainian airports, once the country’s airspace is opened. This will create a comprehensive transport system integrated with the European network and contribute to Ukraine’s economic growth.
